چکیده

We study collisional loss rates due to spin-exchange collisions in very-low-intensity Rb magneto-optical traps. The loss rate exhibits an unpredicted intensity dependence for low intensities, accounting for a large disparity between loss rates observed in light-force traps and magnetically confined Bose condensates. Possible collision mechanisms considered include light-altered collision phase shifts, flux enhancement, and excitedstate hyperfine changing collisions.

Spin controlled atom-ion inelastic collisions

The control of ultracold collisions between neutral atoms is an extensive and successful field of study. The tools developed in this field allow for ultracold chemical reactions to be managed using magnetic fields1, light fields2 and spin-state manipulation of the colliding particles3 among other methods. Control of chemical reactions in ultracold atom-ion collisions is a young and growing fiel...

Spin-Exchange in Hydrogen-Antihydrogen Collisions

We consider the spin-exchange in ultracold collisions of hydrogen (H) and antihydrogen (H̄) atoms. The cross sections for transitions between various hyperfine states are calculated. We show that the process of spin exchange in H̄ − H collisions is basically driven by the strong force between proton and antiproton, that spin-exchange cross-sections are proportional to the difference of singlet an...

Quantum logic via the exchange blockade in ultracold collisions.

A nuclear spin can act as a quantum switch that turns on or off ultracold collisions between atoms even when there is neither interaction between nuclear spins nor between the nuclear and electron spins. This "exchange blockade" is a new mechanism for implementing quantum logic gates that arises from the symmetry of composite identical particles, rather than direct coupling between qubits. We s...

Quantum dynamics of ultracold Na+ Na2 collisions.

Ultracold collisions between spin-polarized Na atoms and vibrationally excited Na2 molecules are investigated theoretically, using a reactive scattering formalism (including atom exchange). Calculations are carried out on both pairwise additive and nonadditive potential energy surfaces for the quartet electronic state. The Wigner threshold laws are followed for energies below 10(-5) K. Vibratio...

Probing Ultracold Collisional Dynamics with Frequency-Chirped Pulses

We report on the dynamics of ultracold collisions induced by near-resonant frequency-chirped light. A series of identical chirped pulses, separated by a variable delay, is applied to an ultracold sample of Rb, and the rate of inelastic trap-loss collisions is measured. For small detunings of the chirped light below the atomic resonance, we observe that the rate of collisions induced by a given ...
